celebrations coming up. good morning to you, washington. i am cynne simpson. >> i am scott thuman. many school districts and local governments have delayed starts to work and school aides -- school days to keep people off the roads. we are running all of those closures and delays at the top of your screen. >> the smithsonian museum, the national zoo, not opening until noon. keep an eye out if you are planning to head out. it is 6:01. adam caskey begins our storm watch coverage. he is outside in the elements. >> what are you looking at? >> last time i was out here, about half an hour ago we had sleet. now it iwe are two degrees above freezing. the salt truck came by and dumped these big chunks of rock salt here. luckily, the roads are pretty well treated. there will still be some slight

spots, especially on the side streets. look at the size of the salt. look at the radar. we have a pretty much every type of winter precipitation falling. we have rain freezing rain sleet, and a little bit o colorful radar. for the most part, we have sleet fog and rain and fog -- reining -- raining. the freezing rain is from hagerstown to martinsburg and frederick. there was snow, just now sleet. not much in terms of ic accumulation but it does not take much to cause problems. later this morning, light rain, above freezing and 41 for the afternoon high. back to you. >> thank you so much, adam. let's check in on traffic with jamie. >> good morning. i have you appear on the map. interstate 95, two separate accidents between quantico and humphries.

but not too bad. traffic seems to be moving at speed. there have been a number of overpasses. those seem to be ok as well. there have been a lot of salt trucks out on the maryland highway, treating the roads throughout the morning, trying to make it as easy as possible for people out on the roadways today amongst the sleet, freezing rain, and rain. here along interstate 70, in the howard county area, we're just seeing rain. the freezing rain, no sleet we are experiencing at the moment. the condition, it seems to be moving relatively well. there are a number of schools that have been closed or have a delayed start as a result of the conditions we are getting throughout the region. things look good here in this section of maryland. we will continue to monitor the roads. for a check on other roads we'll go to jamie. >> we will take it from here. it is 6:04. jummy olabanji is done on

capitol hill outside the stone -- the smoke -- the smithsonian. how is it looking at? >> the freezing rain continues to fall out here. weekend kind of show you the conditions over here. because the sun is not up you cannot see it, but there is a thin layer of these ice crystals along the national mall below my feet. that is right behind us on a night -- ninth street. we sought to coat sand trucks moving through the area. they were going around the city laying down more of the sand and salt to make sure that the roads will not be very slight. they are beginning to be very slick. when you're walking on the sidewalks or the street, you have to be careful when you're walking. this is the reason that d.c. governments, federal government d.c. schools and courts are all opening on a delayed schedule this morning.

checking on whether -- checking on news around the world at least two -- 233 people were killed in the massive fire at a brazilian the nightclub despite club in santa maria. pyrotechnics sparked the blaze investigators believe, and the club had reached its capacity when it started. there was only one exit. security guards kept them from fleeing the club. mexican authorities say eight bodies were pulled from a well. they expect to find more. 20 people disappeared, and 16 were a band and crew that disappeared after a performance in hidalgo. parts of egypt are now under curfew and the like -- in light of clashes that broke out in cairo. president mohamed morsi declared a state of emergency in three

provinces near the suez canal. there were fueled by anger over his as honest policies and the slow pace of change. >> -- his islamist policies and the slow pace of change. >> daniel wright is charged with the shooting of patricia cook last february. he was responding to the report of a suspicious vehicle in a parking lot when he shot her. on friday, his wife testified that he fired shots after cook rolled up the window on his hand and started driving away. prosecutors and witnesses who testified said his hand was never stop. opening statements resume today in the retrial of former d.c. nightclub owner antoine jones. the supreme court overturned his conviction on drug charges saying that they overstepped their bounds when the left a tracking device on his car. this was after a search warrant ran out. jones is now acting as his own

attorney. >> a bipartisan group of eight senators is scheduled to unveil an agreement on the principles of sweeping legislation to rewrite the nation's immigration law. they tackled several big issues including border security, a guest workers, and employer verification, as well as a pathway to citizenship for 11 million undocumented immigrants in the u.s. >> we have been going for 25 years without a clear statement about immigration policy. that is unacceptable in this nation of immigrants. >> we cannot go on forever with 11 million people living in this country living in the shadows. >> president obama plans to head to nevada tamara to unveil his own proposals. >> the set is set to vote today on $51 billion aid package to help the victims of superstorm sandy. northeast lawmakers from both parties are hoping to win senate approval and send the bill to president obama who has said he will sign it.

the house passed the bill last week. 6:18. adam caskey is joining us. >> we're looking at a wintery mix. rain, freezing rain, sleet, and a little bit of snow. it is the epitome of the wintery mix. luckily, we are not looking at all that much. it does not take all that much ice to cause big issues for the morning commute. the timing is not right. here is a live look at super doppler 7. the white indicates snow, being reported at the airport and north of baltimore towards aberdeen. the paint around the metro area is a little bit -- a little bit of sleet. on interstate 270 sleet, and in hagerstown and martinsburg that is where we see reports of freezing rain. that is where we should have the most amount of icing. not a ton. not enough to bring down trees

freezing rain. that is what we had early this morning. the precipitation will be confined just to the early morning hours. that is what we're looking at. that is the concern. we're not looking at much. it does not take much to cause big issues for commute. this one falls into the morning commute. here is like a super doppler 7. the agreement along the south end of the beltway, i-395, 95, that indicates green -- that indicates light rain. here in rosslyn, just like train which is not freezing on contact. -- light rain which is not freezing on contact. here is a look at our express forecast. a cold rain by 10 or 11:00 a.m., cloudy and 41 degrees by the afternoon. the issues will be confined to them -- to the early morning

[no audio] >> we made our way up towards baltimore. a lot of traffic with us. we are starting to see a little bit more of the freezing rain and sleet mixture of in with the rain. it is a mix of both of those. it is also a lot of salt down on the roads. we have piles and piles of salt that is down on the road. traffic seems to be moving relatively well, despite the number of cars that are out on the road this morning. the six spots do not seem to be too prevalent on this road. you see traffic is still moving. we're starting to see a little bit of the mixture.

a lot of the cars we are seeing seem to have all little bit of a coating of ice that it cannot scrape off before leaving home. it accumulated -- or maybe it accumulated for driving this morning. we are seeing that mix and. driving so far has been ok. we are trying to seat if overpasses have been any worse. things do not seem to have been too bad so far. that is the news on traffic. things are not looking at that because there are some makers that have been out. we see a number of assault truck trains, the lines of small trucks moving down the interest rate -- the interstate. that is the good news. we will have another update before the end of the newscast. we will send it back inside, to jaime to get a look on the other roads. >> my pleasure brianne. be careful out there. as brianne mentioned, perhaps, overpasses and the elevated surfaces, watch and use extra caution. they tend to rephrase quicker

around here at the national mall and along the capitol hill area. they're driving through, putting down more of that salty and sandy mixture, as they have been doing over the past few days. the road conditions are pretty good. the sidewalks, there is not any on there. there are some slick spot. be careful as you do leave the house. as we have been reporting, the federal government is opening on a delayed schedule, the d.c. government opening on a delayed schedule, seven universities american, george town all opening after 11:00. d.c. schools opening on a two hour delay. the museums along the national mall opening around noon. the libraries in d.c. just announcing they will be opening late as well. everybody allowing themselves to take extra time to get out the door, take the extra time to get to work or school, because the conditions are pretty slick for those who are driving. reporting live, jummy olabanji

>> outside an appeals court one man is freed and barred from being tried on murder charges. justin wolff's case should be heard today. prosecutors failed to retry him within the timeframe the judge ordered.

prosecutors are appealing that ruling. there appears to be a sharp decrease in the number of people killed or injured by guns in virginia. the office of the chief medical examiner said firearm-related murders fell 32%, up from 367 in 2005 to 242 in 2011. the number of firearm-related injuries that required hospitalization adel 2 -- 28%. -- fell 28%. >> we are following a developing story out of japan where investigators are looking into problems of batteries on 773 miners. officials say -- 787 dreamliners. officials found no evidence that the battery maker was the source of the problem. all 787s were grounded after
